Fosamax® can be used to treat Paget's Disease. Paget's disease affects bones. Throughout a person's life bone is constantly breaking down and growing back. With Paget's disease, the bone starts to break down more quickly. When it grows back again, it is slightly softer than normal bone. Soft bones can bend or break much more easily. The area affected by Paget's disease can become shorter because the bone bends. With Paget's disease the bone can also grow larger than before. Paget's disease can affect any bone, but most commonly affects the skull, the hip and pelvis bones and bones in the legs and back.
Men are more likely to be affected by Paget's disease than women, but it can affect both. It is most common in people who are over the age of 40.
It is difficult to know if you have Paget's Disease. A common sign is pain in or over the bone. The area might also be extremely warm. People also tend to become tired with Paget's disease. The shape of the bone can change, since bones may become smaller or larger with Paget's disease. When it affects the skull, along with it getting larger, a loss of hearing may occur. Paget's usually only affects one or two bones.
It is difficult to determine what causes Paget's disease, but people with Paget's disease often have family members who have it as well.
